Identity and Travel: Embracing Growth from Every Place

Identity and Travel: Embracing Growth from Every Place

I was born in Kupang, but from my early teenage years, Jakarta became the place where I grew up and developed myself. My accent leans more toward Jakarta—not because I have forgotten my roots, but because my environment and life experiences have shaped the way I speak and interact. My accent may sound like Kupang, or it may sound like Jakarta. But one thing is certain—I speak with honesty and my own thoughts, not just to meet others' expectations.

The journey that shaped me

For me, a birthplace is part of one's identity, but the place where we grow also plays a big role in shaping who we become. Kupang taught me about my roots and heritage, while Jakarta taught me about the dynamics of life and independence. And beyond these two places, every journey I take adds new experiences that help shape me further.

Travel Tips:

  • Embrace cultural diversity—each place you visit has something to teach you.

  • Be open to different ways of life—local customs and traditions offer valuable lessons.

  • Learn basic local phrases—even a simple greeting in the local language can build connections.

  • Blend in respectfully—adapt to the environment while staying true to yourself.

  • Travel with an open mind—identity is fluid, and every journey adds a new layer to who you are.

So when people ask, "Where are you from?" I proudly answer: I was born in Kupang, but I grew up in Jakarta. Both places are part of who I am. And if someone is bothered by my accent, perhaps they are more concerned with how I speak rather than understanding the depth of my words.

I choose to stay true to myself because my identity is not shaped to fit anyone else's expectations—it is simply a reflection of my journey. And just like travel, identity is an ongoing adventure of growth and discovery.
